Day 22 – Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life. March 27, 2019
On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” John 11:17-27
Jesus arrives to find that Lazarus has already been in the tomb four days. Upon arriving, Lazarus’ sister Martha goes out to meet Jesus. She exhibits an almost stoic faith in Jesus, affirming her belief that if Jesus had been here Lazarus would still be alive. Jesus tells her that Lazarus will rise again, and Martha once again affirms her belief that Lazarus “will rise in the resurrection at the last day.” Then Jesus tells her something earth shattering, “I am the resurrection and the life The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” Jesus really crushes death completely. Death cannot harm the believer in Jesus Christ. If we die, we live. If we live in Christ, we will never die! Jesus changes the final blow of death from a hammer smash to a feather drop. Death has no sting, the grave has no victory! Jesus is the life.
Lord Jesus, thank You for defeating death and conquering the grave. I will not fear what man may do, for he can only touch the outer man. But even though this body dies, I will live in Christ! And since I live my life in Christ I will not die! Thank you for the power of an indestructible life! Amen.
