Day 40 – Jesus Prays for Unity

Day 40 – Jesus Prays for Unity. April 14, 2019

“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:13-23

As Jesus continues His Journey to the Cross, He prays for His Disciples. He knows that they cannot be taken out of the world, for their mission is to impact the world for the Kingdom of God. But He does pray that the Father would protect them from the evil one. For clearly, the evil one is in the world and seeking whom he may devour. He also prays that they would be sanctified by the truth. Since God’s Word is truth, He is really praying that they would be sanctified by the Word. The Word cleans, sanctifies, purifies, makes us fit for God’s service. Lastly He prays, and this now includes all believers of all time, that they would be one as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are One. This unity is a most incredible thing, for it will be so unique, so amazing, that the world will know that Jesus loves them. All men will know that we follow Christ, when we are united in Christ Jesus as Lord.

Lord Jesus, please help me to live as an alien and a stranger in this world. Not as one who belongs to the world. Protect me from the evil one. Set me apart for Your work and will, cleanse me through Your Word and may I only be about Your Truth. Help me to live in Unity with others who bear Your holy Name. Help me to bring Unity to those who are far from You and from each other. Help me participate in Your ministry of reconciliation for all mankind. Thank You for praying for me right now, and for Your promises that are always true. Amen.
