Day 6 – Jesus Predicts His Death. March 11, 2019
The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. John 2:18-22
Often times we cannot understand the meaning of things that happen to us until much later in our lives. We often need the perspective that only the passage of time can provide. Not unlike us, the disciples did not understand what Jesus was saying to the Jews about destroying the temple. But after the events of the crucifixion and resurrection the disciples would recall that Jesus predicted His death in the very earliest stages of His ministry. Nothing took Him by surprise. He knew the cross was His fate. But He also knew that the resurrection was His fate! For in three days the temple of His body would be rebuilt and death would be forever destroyed by the power of His life! And now, through Jesus Christ, our lives have that same power. Awesome.
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your intention to die for us without hesitation. Thank You for going to the cross, not avoiding the pain or the shame, but embracing it all that we too might live. Please help me to place all my faith, all my hope, and all my trust in Your finished work on the cross. Help me not avoid any pain or shame that may come from following the Way of Your cross, but rather embrace the same sacrificial life, that others might live. Amen.
